Beppu Onsen (別府温泉) is a collection of hot springs located in the city of Beppu in Japan. Beppu is famous for having the largest number of sources and the largest volume of hot spring water in Japan, with over 2,300 individual hot spring sources and 130,000 tons of hot spring water per day.
Beppu Onsen is made up of eight distinct hot spring areas, known as the “Beppu Hatto” (別府八湯). Each area offers unique water qualities and characteristics, including mud baths, sand baths, and steam baths, as well as regular hot water baths. Some of the popular hot springs in Beppu include the “Hells of Beppu” (別府地獄めぐり), a group of seven visually stunning hot springs that are too hot for bathing but can be admired from a safe distance. The eighth “hell” called “Tatsumaki Jigoku” (Tornado Hell) is located a bit further away. Among the seven hells, “Chinoike Jigoku” (Blood Pond Hell) offers a foot bath for visitors to enjoy.
Visitors to Beppu Onsen can choose to experience various types of hot springs according to their preferences. Some facilities offer traditional Japanese yukatas or wooden clogs, while others are mixed bathing and require swimsuits. The town also has unique hot springs like sand baths and mud baths.
In addition to the hot springs, Beppu Onsen also features several other attractions, such as souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes. Visitors can also take a stroll through the nearby park or visit the nearby Beppu Tower, which offers panoramic views of the city.
