Yashima (屋島) is a plateau mountain located in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its historical and cultural significance, as well as its scenic beauty.
In the 12th century, the Battle of Yashima, a prelude to the Battle of Dan-no-ura, was fought on and around the mountain between the Taira and Minamoto clans during the Genpei War. The battle is famous for the story of Nasu no Yoichi, who shot down a fan placed on a pole of a Taira ship with a single arrow. Today, visitors can explore the Yashima Battlefield, which features various historical markers and monuments commemorating the battle.
Yashima is also home to several cultural sites, including the Yashima-ji Temple (屋島寺), which is the 84th temple on the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage. The temple complex features several buildings, including a main hall and a pagoda, as well as a beautiful garden and pond. Visitors can also explore the Yashima-ji Temple Treasure House, which exhibits artifacts and documents related to the Genpei War.
Visitors to Yashima can enjoy stunning views of the city of Takamatsu and the Seto Inland Sea from the mountaintop. There are several hiking trails that lead to the summit, as well as a ropeway for those who prefer a more leisurely ascent. By car, the Yashima Driveway provides easy access to the top. Visitors can also visit the New Yashima Aquarium, known for its innovative exhibits, and Shishi no Roken (獅子の霊巌), a cliff where the defeated Taira warrior Taira no Kagekiyo is said to have jumped into the sea.
