Miyakejima (三宅島) is a volcanic island located in the Izu archipelago of Japan. It is part of the Tokyo Metropolitan area and is situated approximately 180 kilometers south of Tokyo. Miyakejima has a population of around 2,600 people, and the main industries on the island are fishing and agriculture.
The island is known for its active volcano, Mount Oyama (雄山), which has erupted numerous times in recent history, most notably in 2000. The volcanic activity has shaped the island’s unique ecosystem and created distinctive landscapes, such as lava flows, black sand beaches, and the barren terrain of the caldera.
Due to the 2000 eruption, the island’s entire population had to evacuate for approximately 4 years and 5 months due to the release of toxic gases. After implementing safety measures and monitoring systems, residents have since returned, and the island is now open to tourists again. Visitors can experience the island’s volcanic features firsthand by hiking to the summit of Mount Oyama or exploring the hardened lava flows.
Besides its volcanic attractions, Miyakejima offers beautiful beaches, lush forests, and opportunities for hiking, fishing, and diving. The island is home to several endemic species of plants and animals, making it a fascinating destination for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can learn about the island’s geology and volcanic history at the Volcano Museum or experience the island’s unique landscape on the Volcano Experience Walking Trail.
Miyakejima also boasts a unique culinary scene, featuring local specialties like “ashitaba” (a type of leafy green vegetable) and “kusaya” (a fermented fish dish).
