Sakae

Sakae (栄) is a vibrant district located in the heart of Nagoya, the fourth-largest city in Japan. Easily accessible via Sakae Station on the Nagoya Municipal Subway’s Higashiyama and Meijo lines, it is renowned for its bustling streets, upscale shopping centers, and lively nightlife. Sakae is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, offering a wide array of restaurants, cafes, bars, and entertainment venues.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Sakae is the Oasis 21 complex, a futuristic glass-walled structure housing shops, restaurants, and a rooftop park called the “Spaceship-Aqua.” Another popular attraction is the Nagoya TV Tower, a 180-meter-tall tower that offers panoramic views of the city.

Sakae is a shopper’s paradise, with numerous department stores like Matsuzakaya Nagoya and Mitsukoshi Nagoya Sakae, fashion buildings such as LACHIC and PARCO, and the underground shopping area “Central Park.” The district also boasts a diverse culinary scene, featuring Nagoya’s signature dishes (Nagoya meshi) as well as various international cuisines.

For cultural experiences, Sakae offers the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater, which hosts operas, ballets, and musicals, and Sakae Hiroba (Sakae Square), a venue for events and outdoor concerts. The Chunichi Building features a rooftop restaurant with stunning views of Nagoya’s skyline.

Sakae is also home to Hisaya Odori Park, a large, green oasis often referred to as Nagoya’s Central Park. The park underwent a major redevelopment in 2020, adding new attractions and amenities. Additionally, Sunshine Sakae, a multi-purpose commercial complex, features the Sky-Boat Ferris wheel as its iconic symbol.
