Kehi no Matsubara

Kehi no Matsubara

Kehi no Matsubara (気比の松原) is a scenic pine grove located in the city of Tsuruga (formerly Obama), Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The grove stretches along the coast of the Sea of Japan for about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles), offering breathtaking views of the ocean and a tranquil atmosphere.

Designated as a national scenic spot and a natural monument of Japan, Kehi no Matsubara boasts a unique landscape shaped by the harsh coastal winds and the Sea of Japan. The pine trees in the grove, some estimated to be over 350 years old, exhibit distinctive shapes and forms, creating a picturesque and iconic scene. The grove also provides a habitat for various wildlife, including birds, insects, and small mammals.

Kehi no Matsubara has a rich history and cultural significance. According to legend, the grove was once a place where the gods descended from heaven and enjoyed the scenic beauty. During the Edo period (1603-1868), it served as an important resting place along the Saba Kaido (鯖街道), a trade route that connected the region with Kyoto, where mackerel was transported.

Today, visitors can explore Kehi no Matsubara by strolling along the well-maintained pathways that meander through the pine grove. The grove offers several observation decks and rest areas where visitors can relax and appreciate the picturesque scenery. In addition, the grove provides opportunities for various activities, such as swimming, beach volleyball, and camping during the summer months.

The Kehi Jingu Shrine (気比神宮), located adjacent to the grove, is another must-visit attraction. This ancient shrine is dedicated to the god of the sea and is considered a guardian deity of the area. The shrine’s annual festival, held in September, is a vibrant celebration with traditional music, dance performances, and a procession of mikoshi (portable shrines).
