Tojinbo (東尋坊) is a rugged coastline located on the Sea of Japan in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its dramatic cliffs, unique rock formations, and beautiful views of the sea. Tojinbo is a popular tourist destination and is particularly famous for its spectacular sunsets.
The coastline of Tojinbo features tall, jagged cliffs that have been shaped over time by the crashing waves of the Sea of Japan. The cliffs are made of pyroxene andesite, which is known for its unique hexagonal columns that resemble giant steps leading down to the sea. Visitors can walk along a series of trails and observation decks that offer stunning views of the cliffs and the sea. Boat tours are also available, providing a unique perspective of the cliffs and sea caves from the water.
One of the famous attractions at Tojinbo is the Tojinbo Tower, a 55-meter-high observation tower that offers panoramic views of the coastline, sea, and the nearby Oshima Island (雄島), connected by a bright red bridge. The tower has an observation deck with coin-operated binoculars for a closer look at the scenery.
Tojinbo is also known for its natural beauty and is home to various plants and animals, including seabirds and wildflowers. The coastal trails extend north beyond Tojinbo and feature views of the seaside scenery and wildlife from various lookout points and rest huts. Visitors can hike to Oshima Island, known for its unique rock formations, caves, and a shrine.
While Tojinbo is a beautiful and popular tourist destination, it’s important to note that it has a history as a suicide spot. In recent years, local authorities and organizations have been actively working to prevent suicides and offer support to those in need.
