Gujo Town

Gujo Town

Gujo (郡上) is a city located in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The central area of the city, Gujo Hachiman, is known for its well-preserved historic district, traditional Japanese culture, beautiful scenery, and unique food.

One of the main attractions of Gujo Hachiman is its historic district, which features traditional Japanese architecture and cobblestone streets. Visitors can explore the district and see various old houses, shops, and temples, such as Gujo Hachiman Castle. They can also stroll along the Yoshida River or visit the Igawa Komichi, a charming path along a smaller canal.

Another popular attraction in Gujo is the Gujo Odori, a traditional Japanese dance festival that takes place in the summer. The festival lasts for 32 consecutive nights, from mid-July to the end of August, with locals and visitors alike participating in the dance and celebration.

Gujo is also known for its cuisine, particularly its freshwater fish, thanks to the city’s clear mountain water, which is used to raise ayu (sweetfish) and other fish. Visitors can try these fish in various dishes, such as tempura or grilled with salt.

Finally, Gujo is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts, as it is surrounded by mountains and forests. Visitors can go hiking, camping, and fishing in the area, or simply enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Additionally, Gujo Hachiman boasts a rich tradition of craftsmanship, including washi paper-making, pottery, and lacquerware. Visitors can observe skilled artisans at work and purchase locally made souvenirs and gifts. The area is also known as the birthplace of food replicas (sampuru), and visitors can find unique and realistic food samples in various shops.

Gujo Hachiman also houses the Gujo Hachiman Old Government Building Memorial Museum, a Western-style building constructed in the Meiji era and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
