Otaki Cave

Otaki Cave

Otaki Cave (大滝鍾乳洞) is a natural limestone cave located in the town of Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The cave was formed over thousands of years by underground rivers and features a variety of fascinating geological formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and columns.

The cave is known for its stunning beauty and unique features, particularly Japan’s tallest underground waterfall, a 30-meter cascade that gives the cave its name. Visitors can explore the cave’s well-lit, winding passageways at their own pace, marveling at the natural wonders on display. The cave is illuminated, creating a mystical and enchanting ambiance.

Otaki Cave is also home to a colony of bats, which can sometimes be observed in their natural habitat. The cave is open year-round and offers a cool and refreshing respite from the summer heat, with a consistent temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius.

To access the cave entrance, visitors can take a short ride on a unique wooden cable car. Near the entrance, there are restaurants, souvenir shops, and establishments where you can enjoy nagashi somen (flowing noodles). The entire cave experience, including the cable car ride and exploration, takes approximately one hour.
