Miyagawa Morning Markets

Miyagawa Morning Markets

Miyagawa Morning Market (宮川朝市) and Jinya-mae Morning Market (陣屋前朝市) are two popular attractions in Takayama, offering a vibrant and authentic experience for both locals and tourists.

Miyagawa Market, situated along the picturesque Miyagawa River, is open daily from 6:30 am to noon (8:00 am to noon during winter). It boasts a wide variety of stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, and handmade crafts. Visitors can also savor local specialties like Hida beef skewers, grilled river fish, and sake.

Jinya-mae Market, located near Takayama Jinya, a historic government building from the Edo period, is also open daily from 6:30 am to noon (8:00 am to noon during winter). This market offers a similar range of products as Miyagawa Market, with a focus on fresh vegetables, dried foods, and homemade pickles, often sold directly by local farmers.

Both markets are renowned for their friendly and lively atmosphere, where vendors often offer samples and engage in conversations with customers. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the markets, sampling local delicacies, and purchasing unique souvenirs. The Miyagawa Market, considered one of the largest morning markets in Japan, offers a particularly immersive experience, with over 60 shops and stalls lining the riverbank. Visitors can also admire the large koi fish swimming in the Miyagawa River.

With their rich history and cultural significance, the Miyagawa and Jinya-mae Morning Markets offer a unique opportunity to experience the local life and traditions of Takayama.
