
Sanmachi Suji (三町筋) is also a historic district located in the city of Takayama, in the mountainous region of Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The district is also known as Hida-Takayama’s Old Town, and it is a beautifully preserved area that dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868). Sanmachi Suji is characterized by its traditional architecture, with old wooden merchant houses, sake breweries, and shops lining the narrow streets.
Sanmachi Suji is divided into three streets: Kami-Ichino-machi, Kami-Nino-machi, and Kami-Sanno-machi, which are collectively known as the “Sanmachi Suji.” The area is famous for its well-preserved architecture, which includes many buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties. Visitors can stroll through the streets and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the old town, with its historic buildings and traditional shops selling local specialties such as Hida beef, sake, and crafts.
Takayama is also known for its famous festivals, which take place in the spring and fall. The Takayama Spring Festival and the Takayama Autumn Festival are considered among the most beautiful festivals in Japan, featuring colorful floats, traditional music, and dancing.
