
Takayama Jinya (高山陣屋) is a historic government office building located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It was originally built in 1692 as the administrative center for the Hida region, and it was used as a local government office for over 170 years until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
Today, the Takayama Jinya is a museum and national historic site, providing visitors with a fascinating insight into the history and politics of the region during the Edo period. The building and its surrounding gardens have been carefully preserved, providing a glimpse into the architecture and landscape of the time.
The museum exhibits various artifacts related to the governance of the Hida region during the Edo period, including official documents, tools, and household goods used by the governors and officials. Visitors can also explore the various rooms in the building, such as the courtroom, reception hall, and living quarters, which are furnished with period furniture and other artifacts.
One of the highlights of the Takayama Jinya is the underground prison cells, where criminals were held and interrogated during the Edo period. Visitors can descend into the cells and see firsthand the conditions in which prisoners were held, as well as the torture devices used to extract confessions.
