Natadera Temple

Natadera Temple (那谷寺) is a Buddhist temple located in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It is situated on the side of a mountain and overlooks the Sea of Japan. The temple is known for its scenic beauty, as well as its historical and cultural significance.

According to legend, Natadera Temple was founded around 717 AD by a Buddhist monk named Taicho. It is said that he was inspired to establish the temple after having a vision of the sacred Mount Hakusan while on a pilgrimage. Over the centuries, the temple has been rebuilt and expanded several times, but it has always remained an important center of Buddhist practice and learning.

One of the most notable features of Natadera Temple is the Sanmon Gate, which dates back to the 17th century. This gate is considered one of the finest examples of Zen architecture in Japan. Other notable buildings at the temple include the Hondo (main hall), a designated Important Cultural Property, the Kaisando (founder’s hall), the Amida-do (Amida hall), and the three-storied pagoda.

In addition to its architectural and cultural significance, Natadera Temple is also known for its natural beauty. The temple grounds are home to numerous gardens, ponds, and waterfalls, as well as a forested area that is popular for hiking. Visitors to the temple can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding landscape from several vantage points, including the Kigan-dai observation deck, the Kannon-do hall, and the unique rock formations of Kiyoyu Kosenkyo. The temple is also famous for its stunning autumn foliage.

By Train and Bus

From Kaga Onsen Station:

  • Take the Can Bus Yamamawari Route
  • Journey time: 50 minutes
  • Frequency: Every two hours

From Komatsu Station:

  • Take a regular bus
  • Journey time: 35 minutes
  • Cost: 540 yen one way
  • Frequency: Every 1-2 hours
  • This bus also stops at Awazu Station and Awazu Onsen

By Car

  • About 1 hour from the Katayamazu or Kaga exits on the Hokuriku Expressway
