Kanazawa Castle (金沢城) is a historic castle located in the city of Kanazawa, Japan. The castle was first built in 1583 by the Maeda clan, who ruled the region during the Edo period (1603-1868). The castle complex covers an area of approximately 26 hectares and includes several buildings, gardens, and defensive structures.
The main building of Kanazawa Castle, known as the Hishi Yagura, is a six-story tower that served as a watchtower and command center during times of war. Other notable structures within the castle complex include the Gojikken Nagaya, a long warehouse used for storing weapons and supplies, and the Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura, a gatehouse that protected the castle’s main entrance.
During the Meiji period (1868-1912), the castle was partially destroyed, and many of its buildings were lost. However, several structures were reconstructed in the 20th century, and the castle complex was opened to the public as a park in 1996.
The castle also includes several gardens, including the Gyokusen-en Garden, which features a large pond and a variety of seasonal flowers and trees. The castle park is a popular destination for picnics, cherry blossom viewing, and other outdoor activities.
