Nagamachi District

Nagamachi District

Nagamachi Bukeyashiki District (長町武家屋敷跡), often shortened to Nagamachi District, is a historic district located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It was once home to the samurai of the powerful Maeda clan, who ruled the Kaga Domain during the Edo period (1603-1868). The district is renowned for its well-preserved traditional Japanese architecture, narrow winding lanes, earthen walls, and waterways, all of which evoke its samurai past.

Nagamachi was home to numerous samurai residences, with some still standing today. These residences were typically built with distinctive features like long, narrow plots of land, high mud walls for privacy and security, and hidden entrances or escape routes in case of emergencies. The Nomura-ke (野村家), a samurai residence open to the public, is a prime example, showcasing a large garden, traditional tatami rooms, and displays of samurai armor, weapons, and artifacts.

While the samurai residences are the main draw, Nagamachi also offers other cultural attractions. Visitors can learn about traditional crafts such as gold leaf production, for which Kanazawa is famous, as well as other crafts like lacquerware and Kaga Yuzen dyeing. Several small museums and workshops in the district offer insights into these traditional arts.

Although the Oyama Shrine (尾山神社) is not located within Nagamachi, it is a short distance away and worth visiting due to its historical connection to the Maeda clan and Nagamachi. Known for its unique gate combining Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural styles, and its serene garden, the shrine is a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

Nagamachi District is a captivating destination for those interested in Japanese history and samurai culture. Its well-preserved streets and traditional architecture offer a glimpse into the past, while its cultural attractions and scenic beauty make it a worthwhile visit for any traveler exploring Kanazawa.
