Myoryuji Temple (妙立寺), commonly known as the “Ninja Temple” or “Ninjadera,” is a Buddhist temple located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It was built in 1643 by the third lord of the Kaga domain, Maeda Toshitsune, as a hidden temple and watchtower to protect Kanazawa Castle. While not directly associated with ninjas, its unique design features, such as hidden rooms, secret passageways, trap doors, and a complex layout, have earned it the nickname “Ninja Temple.”
The temple appears to be a two-story building from the outside, but actually has four stories above ground with seven internal levels, containing a total of 23 rooms and 29 staircases. This creates a labyrinthine interior designed to confuse intruders. Other defensive features include hidden doors, trap floors, secret passageways, and a lookout tower. There is also a deep well within the temple that is rumored to connect to Kanazawa Castle through a secret tunnel, though this has never been verified. The complex layout and numerous tricks were designed to serve as a disguised military outpost and defensive structure.
Despite its deceptive appearance, Myoryuji Temple boasts beautiful architecture and complex defensive features. The temple’s main hall is characterized by a unique architectural style that incorporates many tricks, such as hidden staircases and secret rooms. The small gardens of the temple provide a tranquil oasis amidst its intricate design.
Today, Myoryuji Temple is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world who are fascinated by its history, unique architecture, and ninja-like features. However, due to its delicate structure and preservation efforts, visits are by reservation only, and photography is not allowed inside the temple.
