The Nishi Chaya District (にし茶屋街) is a historic district located in the city of Kanazawa, Japan. It is one of three geisha districts in the city, with the others being Higashi Chaya and Kazue-machi. The district is known for its well-preserved traditional Japanese architecture and teahouses where geishas entertain guests with traditional dance, music, and conversation.
The Nishi Chaya District was established in the late 1820s and was home to many wealthy merchants and samurai who would visit the teahouses to be entertained by the geishas. Today, the district is open to visitors who can walk along the narrow streets and admire the traditional wooden buildings, some of which date back to the Edo period (1603-1868).
In addition to the teahouses, the Nishi Chaya District is also home to several museums, shops selling traditional crafts, and restaurants serving local cuisine. Visitors can also attend traditional Japanese cultural events and performances, such as tea ceremonies and shamisen concerts, held in the district throughout the year.
