Oyama Shrine (尾山神社) is a Shinto shrine located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. Originally built in 1599 as a memorial temple for Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Kaga Domain, on Mount Utatsu, it was later relocated to its current site in 1873 and renamed Oyama Shrine. The enshrined deities are Maeda Toshiie and his wife, Omatsu.
The shrine is renowned for its beautiful Shin-en Garden, a Japanese strolling garden featuring a pond, and the impressive three-story Shinmon gate, a unique blend of Japanese, Chinese, and Western architectural styles, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The shrine grounds encompass several smaller shrines and a variety of trees and plants.
Oyama Shrine is also known for its traditional festivals and events. One of the most popular is the annual Oyama-sai Festival held in June, featuring a procession of portable shrines (mikoshi) and traditional music and dance performances. If you wish to see historical artifacts related to the Kaga Domain and the Maeda family, the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History, located adjacent to Kenrokuen Garden, is recommended.
