Chirihama Nagisa Driveway

Chirihama Nagisa Driveway (千里浜なぎさドライブウェイ) is a unique 8-kilometer (5-mile) long beach road located in Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It is the only beach in Japan where visitors can drive their vehicles directly on the sand, offering a one-of-a-kind driving experience alongside the Sea of Japan.

The driveway was officially opened in 1963, although driving on the beach was already possible before that due to the unique composition of the sand. Chirihama’s sand consists of fine grains that are tightly packed together, making it firm enough to support vehicles without causing significant damage to the beach.

Driving along the Chirihama Nagisa Driveway, visitors are treated to stunning views of the Sea of Japan, the Noto Peninsula, and picturesque sunsets. There are designated parking areas along the way where visitors can stop to admire the scenery, take photos, or enjoy a picnic. During the warmer months, the beach is also a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and various beach activities.

Several beachside facilities are available, including restaurants serving fresh seafood, souvenir shops offering local specialties, and beach rental shops providing beach umbrellas and chairs.

While driving on the Chirihama Nagisa Driveway is a thrilling experience, it is essential to follow the rules and regulations to ensure the safety of all visitors and to protect the delicate beach environment. Visitors are advised to drive at a low speed, typically 10 km/h (6 mph), and to avoid driving on the beach during high tide or strong winds. Additionally, vehicles with high ground clearance, such as SUVs or trucks, are recommended, as low-riding vehicles may get stuck in the sand.
