Keta Taisha (気多大社), also known as Keta Grand Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Hakui, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the oldest and most important shrines in the Hokuriku region and is dedicated to Ōkuninushi (大国主), a prominent deity in Japanese mythology associated with nation-building, agriculture, medicine, and matchmaking.
The shrine has a long history, with its origins estimated to date back over 2,000 years. The current main hall was built in 1654 and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Keta Taisha is also known for its unique religious festivals, including the Keta Taisha Tairyo-bata Festival, which is held every May. During the festival, huge tairyo-bata flags (大漁旗), traditionally flown on fishing boats to celebrate large catches and pray for safe voyages, are hung throughout the shrine grounds. Traditional performances such as kagura (sacred Shinto dance) and taiko drumming are also held.
The shrine is located near the coast and its grounds offer stunning views of the sea and the surrounding countryside. Visitors can also explore Keta-no-Naritasan (気多の成田山), a sub-shrine within the Keta Taisha grounds that is dedicated to Fudō Myōō, a wrathful deity who protects Buddhism.
