Mount Fuji (富士山) is a renowned and iconic volcano in Japan, standing as the highest peak in the country at an elevation of 3,776.24 meters (12,389 feet). Located approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, it spans across the prefectures of Shizuoka and Yamanashi. Revered as one of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013, Mount Fuji is a popular destination for both Japanese and international tourists. Its last eruption was the Hoei eruption in 1707.
Climbing Mount Fuji is a popular activity during the official climbing season from early July to early September, with thousands of people making the ascent each year. There are four main routes up the mountain: Yoshida Trail, Subashiri Trail, Gotemba Trail, and Fujinomiya Trail. Climbers can choose to climb during the day or at night, with the Yoshida Trail being the most popular, starting from the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station and taking approximately 5-7 hours to reach the summit, where they can find the Mount Fuji Summit Post Office.
In addition to climbing, there are many other activities and attractions around Mount Fuji. Visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Fuji Five Lakes (Lake Yamanaka, Lake Kawaguchiko, Lake Saiko, Lake Shoji, and Lake Motosu), explore the Oshino Hakkai springs in Oshino village, visit museums, ride thrilling rollercoasters at Fuji-Q Highland amusement park, and relax in hot springs. The mountain’s elegant silhouette remains a popular subject for artists and is featured on various souvenirs.
