Bessho Onsen (別所温泉) is a charming hot spring resort town located in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Nestled in the foothills of the Japanese Alps, it is renowned for its scenic beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and therapeutic hot springs.
Legend has it that the hot springs of Bessho Onsen were discovered over 1,300 years ago by a Buddhist priest named Ennin during the Heian period. Since then, the area has flourished as a popular destination for those seeking the healing benefits of the mineral-rich waters. The town boasts numerous traditional Japanese inns (ryokan), offering comfortable lodging and access to the soothing hot springs.
Bessho Onsen also boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage. The town is home to several historic temples and shrines, many dating back to the 8th century. During the Kamakura period, under the patronage of the Hojo clan, numerous temples were built, adding to the town’s spiritual significance.
One of the most famous landmarks is the Hokukannon Temple, which serves as the central temple of the Bessho Sanraku-ji Temple complex. Another must-see attraction is the Anraku-ji Temple, home to the National Treasure octagonal three-story pagoda. The Shinano Kokubun-ji Temple, associated with the warlord Sanada Yukitaka, is also well-known.
Bessho Onsen hosts various festivals throughout the year, including a lantern festival in August and a snow festival in February.
