kyu karuizawa

Kyu-Karuizawa (旧軽井沢), meaning “Old Karuizawa,” is a popular area located in the heart of Karuizawa, a resort town in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its natural beauty, fresh mountain air, and luxurious accommodations.

Kyu-Karuizawa was initially developed as a summer retreat in the late 19th century for foreign missionaries, teachers, diplomats, and other expatriates. Later, it also became a sought-after destination for affluent Japanese residents. Today, it thrives as a bustling tourist area, boasting a diverse range of shops, restaurants, and attractions.

One of the main attractions in Kyu-Karuizawa is Ginza Street, a charming shopping street lined with traditional buildings and boutique shops. These shops offer a wide array of local goods, including handicrafts, souvenirs, and gourmet foods. Visitors can also relish the scenic beauty of Kyu-Karuizawa, including the lush forests and crystal-clear streams found in the surrounding mountains. The picturesque Kumoba Pond is another highlight of the area.

Kyu-Karuizawa is home to several historical and cultural attractions as well. These include the Karuizawa Shaw Memorial Church, a beautiful wooden church built in the early 20th century, and the Kyu-Karuizawa Roman Catholic Church (Saint Paul Catholic Church), known for its stunning stained glass windows and tranquil atmosphere.

The area also boasts several luxury hotels and resorts. While the iconic Karuizawa Prince Hotel is located in the nearby Nakakaruizawa area, Kyu-Karuizawa itself offers many upscale accommodation options, such as the Mampei Hotel, beloved by John Lennon, and the Mikasa Hotel, a historic wooden hotel built in the Meiji era and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
