Shiraito Waterfall

Shiraito Waterfall

Shiraito Waterfall (白糸の滝) is a beautiful natural waterfall located in the town of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The waterfall is known for its picturesque beauty and is a popular destination for visitors seeking to experience the natural beauty of Japan.

Shiraito Waterfall is fed by underground water from Mount Asama, flowing down a series of curved, moss-covered rocks in numerous thin streams, creating a curtain-like effect. It stands approximately 3 meters high and spans about 70 meters wide. The water from the falls is crystal clear and is said to be some of the purest in Japan.

The name Shiraito means “white threads” in Japanese, which aptly describes the delicate, white streams of water cascading down the falls, creating a mesmerizing sight. The falls are surrounded by lush greenery and are particularly beautiful in the autumn when the leaves change color.

Visitors can easily access the falls via a short walk from the nearby parking lot. For those seeking a more immersive experience, a longer hiking trail leads to the top of the falls, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. Several observation decks and rest areas are available along the way, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the falls and the surrounding natural scenery.
