Narai

Narai

Narai (奈良井) is a historic post town located in the Kiso Valley of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It was once a thriving stop on the Nakasendo trade route between Kyoto and Tokyo during the Edo period (1603-1868). Designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, it is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved traditional Japanese architecture.

The town features a long, narrow street lined with traditional wooden buildings with thatched roofs, many of which are over 200 years old. During the Edo period, Narai flourished as the largest post town on the Nakasendo, earning the nickname “Narai of a thousand houses.” Visitors can wander through the town, exploring its many shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks, such as the Narai-juku Honjin (the former inn for government officials) and the Kiso Narai-juku Museum, which provides insights into the town’s history and culture.

Narai is also a haven for hikers and walkers, situated along the Nakasendo Trail, a historic trail that winds through the Kiso Valley, connecting to other post towns like Magome and Tsumago. The surrounding countryside boasts scenic beauty, with mountains, forests, and the Narai River providing a picturesque backdrop for outdoor activities. Narai is also known for its Kiso lacquerware, a traditional craft of the region.

With its easy access from Narai Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, Narai offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the charm of a traditional Japanese post town. A range of traditional ryokan inns and minshuku guesthouses are available for those who wish to stay overnight and fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of this historic town.
