Norikura (乗鞍) is a volcanic mountain range located on the border between Nagano and Gifu Prefectures in Japan. The highest peak in the range is Mount Norikura‘s Kengamine Peak, with an elevation of 3,026 meters (9,928 feet), making it the 12th highest mountain in Japan.
Norikura is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of hiking trails that range in difficulty and length. The most accessible route to the summit area is via the Norikura Skyline, a scenic toll road that can be navigated by bus, taxi, or bicycle. The area is particularly beautiful in the summer months, when the mountains are covered in alpine flowers, such as the Japanese pink and the chocolate lily, and the weather is mild.
The Norikura Highlands, situated on the Nagano Prefecture side of the mountain, offer stunning natural landscapes, including waterfalls, marshes, and forests. The area is also known for its numerous hot springs, including the famous milky-white waters of Shirahone Onsen.
During the winter months, the Norikura Plateau transforms into a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding, with several ski resorts operating from December to April. The best snow conditions are typically found in January and February.
Whether you are seeking the challenge of hiking to the summit, the serenity of the alpine meadows, or the thrill of winter sports, Norikura offers a diverse range of experiences for all outdoor enthusiasts.
