Norikura Kogen

Norikura Kogen (乗鞍高原) is a highland area located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, known for its stunning natural beauty and outdoor activities. The Norikura Skyline, a scenic toll road, takes visitors up to an altitude of 2,700 meters, offering breathtaking views of the Japanese Alps. While private vehicles are generally not allowed on the Skyline from late April to mid-November, visitors can access it by bus, taxi, or bicycle.

During summer, Norikura Kogen is a paradise for hiking and mountaineering, with trails suitable for all levels, including a popular route to the summit of Mount Norikura. In winter, the area transforms into a ski and snowboard destination, featuring several resorts with diverse slopes.

Beyond outdoor pursuits, Norikura Kogen boasts natural wonders like the tranquil Lake Ugome, reflecting Mount Norikura, and impressive waterfalls such as Zengoro Falls and Sanbon Falls. Ichinose, the heart of Norikura Kogen, offers campgrounds, lodging, hot springs, and restaurants, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay for visitors.

Getting there

By Train and Bus

  1. Take the Matsumoto Electric Railway from JR Matsumoto Station
  2. Get off at Shin-Shimashima Station (about 30 minutes, 710 yen)
  3. Transfer to an Alpico bus bound for Norikura Kogen (about 45 minutes, 1350 yen)

By Car

  • There’s a large free parking lot at the Norikura Kogen Tourist Center (Kanko Center)

Important Notes

  • From July to October, buses run to the bus terminal near the summit of Mt. Norikura (50 minutes, 1750 yen one-way, 3400 yen round trip)
  • The road to Mt. Norikura is closed to private vehicles, so you need to park at the Tourist Center and take a bus

The Tourist Center is the main transportation hub in Norikura Kogen. It’s the final stop for buses from Matsumoto and the starting point for buses to Mt. Norikura. It also houses a tourist information office and a nature center.
