
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen (戸倉上山田温泉) is a hot spring resort town located in the city of Chikuma, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The town is situated along the Chikuma River and is known for its relaxing hot springs and historical atmosphere.
The hot springs of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen have been in use for over 600 years and are said to have healing properties due to their mineral content. Visitors can enjoy a variety of hot spring baths, including indoor and outdoor baths, as well as private baths for a more exclusive experience. The town boasts nine public outdoor baths, called “sotoyu,” which are popular among both locals and tourists.
Another attraction in Togura Kamiyamada is its well-preserved historical district, featuring traditional Japanese buildings from the Edo period. Visitors can explore the area on foot and learn about the region’s history and culture.
In the summer, Togura Kamiyamada is a great starting point for hiking and cycling in the surrounding mountains, offering stunning views. Mount Kachi (Obasuteyama), for example, is a popular destination with beautiful scenery.
During the winter, visitors can enjoy nearby ski resorts such as Togakushi Ski Resort and Ryuoo Ski Park, offering a variety of slopes for all levels.
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is also home to the beautiful Obasute rice terraces, designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields, which are especially stunning when illuminated at night. The town is also known for its apricots, and in the spring, the area is awash with beautiful blossoms.
Other notable attractions in the area include Choraku-ji Temple, which houses an Important Cultural Property three-story pagoda.
Getting there
By Train
From Tokyo:
- Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Ueda Station (about 1 hour 40 minutes)
- Transfer to the Shinano Railway and get off at Togura Station (about 15 minutes)
From Nagano:
- Take the Shinano Railway from Nagano Station to Togura Station (about 25 minutes)
From Togura Station to the Onsen Area
- Take bus number 9 from Togura Station to the onsen town (5-10 minutes, 200 yen)
- Buses run once every hour or two
- Alternatively, it’s about a 30-minute walk or a 5-10 minute taxi ride (around 1000 yen)
By Car
- About 30 km (1 hour drive) from Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City
