Sengen Shrine

Sengen Shrine

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha (富士山本宮浅間大社), also known as Sengen Taisha in English, is a Shinto shrine located at the base of Mt. Fuji in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the most important shrines dedicated to the goddess of Mt. Fuji, Konohanasakuya-hime, and is known as the “head shrine” of the more than 1,300 Sengen shrines throughout Japan.

The shrine’s history is ancient, dating back to the 9th century. The current buildings were reconstructed in the early 17th century by Tokugawa Ieyasu and are designated as important cultural properties by the Japanese government.

The shrine’s architecture is characterized by its distinctive gabled roofs and wooden carvings depicting scenes from Japanese mythology and nature. The main hall (honden) houses a sacred mirror and a statue of the goddess Konohanasakuya-hime. The shrine grounds also include several smaller buildings, such as a prayer hall and a treasure house. Additionally, there is Wakutama Pond within the grounds, fed by spring water from Mt. Fuji and designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan.

Sengen Shrine has been a central place of worship for Mt. Fuji since ancient times and was traditionally the starting point for pilgrims climbing the mountain. The shrine remains popular with visitors who come to pray for good fortune, success, and safe travels. It is especially busy during the New Year’s holiday when many visitors come to offer their first prayers of the year. The surrounding area features beautiful gardens and walking paths that offer great views of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding countryside. On May 5th, an annual festival with Yabusame (horseback archery) performances dedicated to the deity is held.
