Dogashima (堂ヶ島) is a scenic area located in the western part of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The area is known for its dramatic coastal landscapes, rugged cliffs, and unique rock formations that have been carved out by the sea over millions of years. This geologically significant site is part of the Izu Peninsula Geopark.
One of the most popular attractions in Dogashima is the Tenjinzaki Cape (天神崎), which offers stunning views of the ocean and surrounding coastline. Visitors can take a boat tour to explore the sea caves and rock formations along the coast, including the famous Kannon-iwa, a towering rock formation that resembles the shape of the Buddhist goddess Kannon, and the unique Tensodo Cave (天窓洞) with its circular opening in the ceiling.
Another popular attraction in Dogashima is the Doryu Falls (堂龍の滝), a 25-meter high waterfall that cascades into the ocean. Visitors can view the falls from a scenic overlook, or take a hiking trail that leads down to the base of the falls.
The area is also known for Sanshirojima (三四郎島), a group of islands that become connected to the mainland at low tide through the tombolo phenomenon. Visitors can walk across the tombolo to explore the islands and enjoy the views from the observation deck.
Dogashima is also famous for its fresh seafood, particularly its spiny lobster and abalone. The area is home to many seafood restaurants that offer delicious meals featuring local ingredients. Visitors can also enjoy staying at one of the many hot spring hotels in Dogashima, some of which offer open-air baths with stunning ocean views.
