Jogasaki Coast

Jogasaki Coast

Jogasaki Coast (城ヶ崎海岸) is a scenic stretch of coastline located in the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Formed about 4,000 years ago by a lava flow from the eruption of Mount Omuro, the coast is known for its rugged and dramatic landscape, featuring sea cliffs, unique rock formations, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

One of the most popular attractions along the Jogasaki Coast is the Jogasaki Suspension Bridge (門脇吊り橋), a 48-meter long pedestrian bridge that spans across a deep gorge, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape.

The Jogasaki Coast also features a 9 km long scenic walking trail called the “Jogasaki Picnical Course,” which takes visitors through tunnels, over bridges, and along the rugged coastline, providing stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape. Along this trail, visitors will also encounter a statue of Nichiren, a Buddhist monk who, according to legend, was nearly thrown into the sea from these cliffs due to political persecution during the Kamakura period.

The Jogasaki Coast is also known for its unique rock formations, including the Kadowaki Lighthouse and the Bansho no Iwaya Cave. The Kadowaki Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse that offers stunning views of the ocean, while the Bansho no Iwaya Cave is a sea cave that has been carved out by the waves over millions of years.

To access Jogasaki Coast, visitors can take a 30-minute walk from Jogasaki Kaigan Station on the Izukyu Line or a 15-minute bus ride from Izu Kogen Station.
