The MOA Museum of Art (MOA美術館) is a museum located in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The museum was founded by Mokichi Okada (or Meishu-sama), a spiritual leader and entrepreneur, and opened to the public in 1982.
The museum’s collection includes a wide range of Japanese and East Asian art, spanning several thousand years, from ancient Chinese artifacts to contemporary Japanese art. The collection includes paintings, ceramics, lacquerware, calligraphy, sculptures, and samurai armor and weapons, with highlights such as Ogata Korin’s “Red and White Plum Blossoms” and a large collection of Buddhist art. The museum also houses a full-scale replica of a golden tearoom.
The MOA Museum of Art is located on a hill overlooking Sagami Bay, and its architecture and landscaping are designed to blend in with the natural surroundings. The museum’s galleries are spacious and well-lit, allowing visitors to appreciate the art in a serene and peaceful environment. Visitors can also enjoy the museum’s extensive Japanese garden, which is particularly renowned for its early blooming cherry blossoms and plum trees. In addition, the museum’s Noh theater hosts regular performances.
