Mount Omuro

Mount Omuro

Mount Omuro (大室山) is an extinct volcano located in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Formed approximately 4,000 years ago, this single-eruption volcano has a distinctive bowl-like shape, with a crater measuring about 300 meters in diameter and 70 meters deep. The entire mountain is covered in Japanese pampas grass, and an annual controlled burn in February helps to maintain its unique landscape.

Visitors can reach the summit of Mount Omuro by chairlift, as hiking is not permitted for conservation reasons. At the top, a circular walking trail around the rim of the volcano offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Izu Peninsula, and the surrounding countryside.

Mount Omuro is also known for its unique red-colored soil, rich in sulfur. This soil is used to create a popular souvenir called “Omuroyaki,” a type of pottery fired using the heat from the mountain’s sulfur vents.

Visitors can try their hand at archery or traditional Japanese games like kendama and koma on the summit. At the base of the mountain lies the Omuroyama Sakura no Sato park, home to 1,500 cherry trees of 40 different varieties.

The surrounding area also offers various attractions, such as the Izu Shaboten Zoo and the Jogasaki Coast.
