The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace (韮山反射炉) is a historic industrial site located in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It was built in 1857 during the late Edo period and is one of the oldest surviving examples of a Western-style reverberatory furnace in Japan. The furnace was used to produce pig iron and was operated until 1865.
The site is now open to the public as the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace Historical Park, where visitors can see the furnace and learn about its history and significance in the development of Japan’s modern iron and steel industry. The site has been designated as a National Historic Site and is recognized as an important cultural property by the Japanese government. The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining“.
