Shimoda Park

Shimoda Park

Shimoda Park (下田公園) is a public park located in Shimoda City, on the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The park is famous for its vast collection of hydrangeas, boasting 150,000 bushes that bloom in early summer. It is considered one of the largest hydrangea gardens in Japan, attracting visitors with its vibrant display of colors.

In addition to its stunning hydrangea displays, Shimoda Park offers landscaped gardens and historical landmarks. Visitors can explore the park’s walking trails, enjoy panoramic views of Shimoda Port from various viewpoints, and discover monuments commemorating the city’s history as a treaty port.

While Shimoda Park itself doesn’t house a shrine or aquarium, these attractions can be found within Shimoda City. The Shimoda Floating Shrine, a 300-year-old shrine dedicated to the goddess of water, is located on a small island in a pond near Shimoda Park. The Shimoda Aquarium, home to various marine life, is also a popular destination for families and tourists.

Visitors to Shimoda can combine a visit to Shimoda Park with exploring other historical sites, such as the Ryosenji Temple, dating back to the 16th century, and the Former British Consulate, the residence of the first British consul in Japan.
