Miho no Matsubara

Miho no Matsubara

Miho no Matsubara (三保の松原) is a picturesque pine grove located on the coast of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan. The grove stretches for about 7 kilometers along the coastline and is known for its stunning views of Mount Fuji and the Pacific Ocean. Legend has it that the grove was created by the goddess of Mount Fuji, who planted the pine trees to protect the coast from erosion.

The area is a popular tourist destination and has been designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government. In 2013, it was also registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site as a component of “Mt. Fuji – Object of Faith and Source of Art.” Miho no Matsubara is also famous for its beautiful white sand beach, which is said to have been created by the goddess pouring out a bag of white sand.

One of the most famous pine trees in the grove is known as “Hagoromo no Matsu” (The Pine Tree of the Feathered Robe), which is associated with the legend of a celestial maiden who descended to Earth and left her feathered robe hanging on the tree. The grove has a long history as a scenic spot and has been depicted in numerous poems and paintings throughout the centuries.
