Lake Motosuko (本栖湖), located on the northern side of Mt. Fuji, is one of the five lakes collectively known as the Fuji Five Lakes. It is the westernmost of the five and is celebrated for its clear blue waters, scenic beauty, and the “upside-down Fuji” reflection visible on its surface. The lake is also famous for being depicted on the back of the 1,000 yen bill.
The lake offers a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing for various species such as rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, and Japanese dace. Visitors can also rent paddleboats or kayaks to explore the lake’s shores and take in the stunning views of Mt. Fuji.
One of the main attractions at Lake Motosuko is the annual Motosuko Lake Festival, held in August. The festival features fireworks, traditional Japanese music and dance performances, and food stalls.
While not open to the public, Motosuko Bat Cave, located on the northeastern shore of the lake, is an important research site for bat studies.
The area around Lake Motosuko also boasts several camping sites and onsen (hot spring) resorts.
