Oshino Hakkai

Oshino-Hakkai

Oshino Hakkai (忍野八海) is a picturesque village located in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, nestled near the base of Mt. Fuji. It is renowned for its crystal-clear spring water ponds fed by snowmelt from Mount Fuji and its well-preserved traditional Japanese architecture. The village derives its name from the eight ponds, collectively known as “Hakkai” or “Eight Seas,” which are revered as sacred bodies of water.

The village is a sought-after destination for tourists seeking an authentic glimpse into traditional Japanese culture and architecture. Many of the buildings in the village, including thatched-roof houses and watermills, date back to the Edo period (1603-1868), creating a charming and nostalgic atmosphere.

One of the main highlights of Oshino Hakkai is its pristine spring water, considered some of the purest in Japan. Visitors can witness the water bubbling up from the ground in the eight ponds, which are interconnected by small streams and walking paths. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom of the ponds, revealing lush aquatic plants and colorful fish.

The village offers a variety of experiences for visitors. You can stroll along the picturesque streets, explore the traditional houses, and sample local specialties such as soba noodles and sweets made with local ingredients at the small shops and restaurants. The area is also known for its “wakasagi” (pond smelt) fishing, a popular activity during the winter months.

While the village is not directly associated with the legend of “nagashi somen” (flowing noodles), it is a popular spot to enjoy this refreshing summer dish at nearby restaurants.

Oshino Hakkai is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends natural beauty, cultural heritage, and culinary delights, providing visitors with a memorable experience in the heart of Japan’s countryside.
