Kai-Zenkouji Temple

Kai-Zenkoji Temple (甲斐善光寺) is a Buddhist temple located in the city of Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. The temple is dedicated to Amida Buddha and is one of the oldest and most important temples in the region.

Kai Zenkoji Temple was established in 1558 by the warlord Takeda Shingen, who ruled Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi) from 1540 to 1573. The temple’s main object of worship is a statue of the Amida Buddha flanked by two bodhisattvas. The temple is renowned for its beautiful architecture, which combines elements of both Japanese and Chinese styles.

One of the most important features of the temple is an underground passage where visitors can experience darkness to help them understand the Buddhist concept of paradise. The temple also houses numerous important artifacts and works of art.
