Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle (広島城) was built in 1589 by Terumoto Mori, a powerful daimyo (feudal lord) under the command of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who aimed to unify Japan. The castle served as a strategic stronghold to control the Chugoku region.

Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), Hiroshima Castle remained the seat of the Hiroshima Domain, witnessing the change of ruling clans from Fukushima to Asano.

During World War II, Hiroshima Castle suffered devastating destruction from the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. The castle, once a symbol of power and prosperity, was reduced to ruins, standing as a grim reminder of the war’s immense destruction.

In 1958, through the efforts of the local community and citizens, Hiroshima Castle was reconstructed. The rebuilt castle, while incorporating modern materials and techniques, stayed faithful to its original design, preserving its historical significance.

The castle is located in a park area known as Hiroshima Castle Park, which is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in the spring. The park also features a traditional Japanese garden, a shrine, and a museum dedicated to the history of Hiroshima City.
