Fukiya Village

Fukiya Village

Fukiya Village (吹屋) is a small, historic village located in the city of Takahashi, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its well-preserved Edo-period architecture and traditional crafts, particularly its production of bengara, a red pigment used in paints and crafts.

The village was established in the early 17th century as a center for bengara mining and production, and its wealth led to the construction of many grand homes and buildings that still stand today. Fukiya is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Many of these buildings have been converted into museums and galleries that showcase the village’s rich history and culture.

One of the most popular attractions in Fukiya Village is the Fukiya Furusato Village Folk Museum (吹屋ふるさと村郷土館), which features exhibits on the village’s history and culture, including displays of traditional crafts and artifacts. Visitors can also explore the village’s many historic buildings and homes, many of which have been designated as important cultural assets by the Japanese government. The village is also home to the Bengara Grated House (ベンガラ格子), which is a traditional house with red bengara lattice windows.

Another recommended spot is the Fukiya Bengara Museum, where visitors can learn about the history and production process of bengara.

Fukiya Village is also known for its beautiful natural scenery, including the nearby Fukiya Furusato Park (吹屋ふるさと公園) and the Fukiya Ravine (吹屋渓谷), which feature dramatic rock formations and waterfalls.
