Nariwa Museum

The Nariwa Museum (成羽美術館) is a contemporary art museum located in Nariwa, Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Originally opened in 1953, the museum was redesigned by the renowned architect Tadao Ando and reopened in its current building in 1994.

The museum is nestled within the beautiful natural surroundings of the Chugoku Mountains and features a minimalist design characteristic of Ando’s work. The museum’s galleries are constructed from poured concrete and are arranged around a central courtyard that features a tranquil water feature.

The museum’s collection focuses on modern and contemporary art from Japan and around the world, including works by artists such as Kojima Torajiro, Hirayama Ikuo, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso. The museum has hosted numerous special exhibitions, showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions.

In addition to its galleries, the Nariwa Museum also features a café and gift shop that offer visitors a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The museum is actively involved in educational outreach, hosting artist talks, workshops, and film screenings throughout the year.
