Raikyuji Temple

Raikyuji Temple

Raikyuji Temple (頼久寺) is a temple of the Eigenji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, located in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture. The name of the temple is Tenbashirazan and the principal deity is the Bodhisattva Sho-Kannon. It is also known as the fifth temple in the western part of Bicchu Province and the thirteenth temple in the Setouchi Kannon Sacred Ground.

Yorikyuji Temple is said to have been rebuilt by Ashikaga Takauji in 1339, although its foundation is unknown. Later, Enshu Kobori, who served as a deputy governor of Bicchu Province, laid out the garden.

The garden at Raikyuji Temple is designated as a national place of scenic beauty and is known as one of the early gardens created by Enshu Kobori. It is a dry landscape garden with stones resembling cranes and turtles (Tsurukame-no-niwa) and a large cutting of satsuki trees representing the ocean, all in Enshu’s unique style.
