Former Taisha Station (旧大社駅), also known as Taisha Station Museum, is a historic railway station located in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The station building was built in 1924 and served as the terminal station of the Ichibata Electric Railway’s Taisha Line (later the JR Taisha Line) until it was closed in 1990.
After the station was closed, the building was preserved as a cultural property and converted into a museum dedicated to the history and culture of the Taisha area, particularly focusing on the railway’s role in transporting pilgrims to the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. The museum’s exhibits include photographs, documents, and artifacts related to the railway industry, as well as exhibits on the daily life and culture of the region’s residents.
One of the museum’s most unique features is its “Taisha Line Diorama,” a large-scale model that depicts the Taisha Line and the surrounding landscape in intricate detail. Visitors can view the diorama from a raised platform and see the region’s mountains, forests, rivers, and towns recreated in miniature form.
The station building itself is a well-preserved example of early 20th-century railway architecture, featuring a distinctive Japanese-style roof and wooden interior. Visitors can explore the station building and learn about the history of the Ichibata Electric Railway’s Taisha Line and its importance for Izumo Taisha pilgrims, as well as view exhibits on local crafts, folklore, and traditional festivals.
