Tsuwano Castle Ruins (津和野城跡) are the remains of a castle located in Tsuwano town, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The castle was originally built in 1295 by Yoshimi Yoriyuki during the Kamakura period. After changing hands several times during the Sengoku period, it became an important stronghold for the Kamei clan during the Edo period.
Today, the castle ruins, including stone walls, moats, earthworks, foundation stones, and a well, are preserved within a park that offers scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
Visitors to Tsuwano Castle Ruins can explore the castle grounds and learn about its history and significance in the region. Throughout the park, there are information boards, restored models, and other exhibits that provide insights into the castle’s layout and the daily life of its inhabitants.
One of the most impressive features of the castle ruins is the “Tenshudai,” a stone platform that once supported the castle’s main keep. Although the keep itself no longer exists, the platform offers panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains.
