Tokoji Temple (東光寺) is located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and was built in 1691 as the family temple of Hagi feudal lord Mori Yoshinari. Yoshinari became a devotee of the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism at a young age, and built a spacious hall modeled after the head temple, Obaku Manpuku-ji. He invited Zen master Huikyoku Domei, a high priest from Hagi, as the founder of the temple. After Yoshinari’s death, this became the graveyard and family temple of the Mori family.
Toko-ji Temple was located in the center of Hagi Castle and prospered as an important religious institution for the Hagi clan. There are four nationally designated important cultural properties on the temple grounds, including the Mori family gravesite.
