Hokkaido (北海道), Japan’s northernmost island, is a popular tourist destination known for its rich nature and spectacular scenery throughout the four seasons. The vast land is dotted with national parks such as Shiretoko and Daisetsuzan, featuring majestic mountains, beautiful lakes, and pristine forests.
One of the main tourist attractions is the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival held in February. In summer, lavender fields in Furano and the rolling hills of Biei are popular scenic spots bursting with flowers and greenery. Autumn brings stunning fall foliage in Daisetsuzan and the hot springs of Jozankei.
Facilities that offer close encounters with nature, such as Asahiyama Zoo, Kushiro Wetland National Park, and Akan-Mashu National Park, are also popular. Urban attractions like the night view from Mount Hakodate and the atmospheric scenery of Otaru Canal are equally appealing.
In terms of cuisine, visitors can enjoy local dishes made with fresh seafood, such as sushi and seafood bowls, as well as Genghis Khan (grilled lamb) and soup curry. Regional ramen varieties like Sapporo ramen and Hakodate ramen are also famous.
Hot springs are another major attraction in Hokkaido, with many famous onsen scattered throughout the island, including Noboribetsu Onsen and Lake Toya Onsen. In winter, ski resorts in Niseko and Furano attract many domestic and international tourists for skiing and snowboarding.
Tourism in Hokkaido offers a diverse range of attractions, from its abundant nature and unique culture to delicious food, hot springs, and winter sports. As a premier tourist destination in Japan, Hokkaido provides various enjoyable experiences throughout the year.
