Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) is a popular zoo located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan. It is renowned for its innovative “behavioral exhibits” that allow visitors to observe animals up close and see their natural behaviors from unique perspectives.
The zoo’s exhibits are designed to be interactive and engaging, with many featuring transparent tunnels, domes, and viewing platforms that bring visitors closer to the animals. Some of the most popular attractions include the Penguin Parade, held during winter, where visitors can watch penguins waddle right past them on the snow, and the Polar Bear enclosure, which features underwater viewing tunnels so visitors can observe polar bears swimming overhead.
Asahiyama Zoo is also famous for its winter exhibits, showcasing animals adapted to cold climates, such as the Hokkaido brown bear, polar bear, and Siberian tiger. To ensure comfort even in the cold season, the zoo provides heated walkways and indoor viewing areas.
In addition to its animal exhibits, Asahiyama Zoo offers a variety of educational programs and activities for visitors of all ages. These include guided tours, animal feeding demonstrations known as “Mogu Mogu Time,” and hands-on workshops that help visitors learn more about animal behavior and conservation.
