Motomachi is a historic district located in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan. Situated at the foot of Mount Hakodate, the district was once a foreign settlement and is known for its unique blend of Western and Japanese architecture, as well as its vibrant atmosphere. The hilly streets and exotic scenery create a charming ambiance.

One of the main attractions in Motomachi is the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, a Western-style building that was once used as the city hall. Now a museum, the building, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, showcases the history of Hakodate and its foreign residents through exhibits and historical artifacts.

Another popular attraction in Motomachi is the Hakodate Orthodox Church, a beautiful Russian Orthodox church built in the late 19th century. This church, also an Important Cultural Property, is known for its distinctive onion domes and colorful frescoes and is one of the most photographed buildings in the city.

Motomachi is also home to other historic churches such as Hakodate St. John’s Church and Motomachi Roman Catholic Church. Visitors to Motomachi can also enjoy a leisurely walk through the district’s narrow streets and alleys, lined with cafes, boutiques, and restaurants offering local delicacies like seafood bowls and Lucky Pierrot burgers. The area has a lively atmosphere and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

  • Get off at “Jujigai” stop (about 5 minutes)
  • Walk about 2 minutes from Jujigai stop to reach the Motomachi area
