Kushiro Marshlands

Kushiro Marshlands

Kushiro Marshlands (釧路湿原), also known as Kushiro Shitsugen in Japanese, is a vast wetland located in the eastern part of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. It is the largest marshland in Japan, covering an area of approximately 28,000 hectares.

Kushiro Marshlands is a unique ecosystem that supports a diverse range of plant and animal species, including several endangered species such as the Japanese crane (red-crowned crane). The wetland is also home to many species of waterfowl, eagles, and other birds.

The marshland has been designated as a national park and a Ramsar site, recognizing its international importance. It is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, bird watchers, and photographers, who come to witness the diverse wildlife and landscapes.

Visitors can explore the marshland through guided tours or by walking on the numerous trails and boardwalks built to protect the fragile ecosystem. However, please note that some areas have restricted access for conservation purposes. The wetland also offers several observatories that provide panoramic views of the marshland and its inhabitants.

Kushiro Marshlands can be accessed by bus or car from JR Kushiro Station. The marshland offers different attractions throughout the year, such as blooming marsh plants in spring, canoeing and boat tours in summer, beautiful autumn foliage, and the arrival of red-crowned cranes in winter.
