Kaminoko-ike Pond

Kaminoko-Ike Pond

Kaminoko Pond (神の子池), also known as “Pond of God’s Child,” is a volcanic lake nestled within Akan National Park on the eastern side of Hokkaido, Japan. Formed by volcanic activity, this crater lake is celebrated for its mesmerizing blue and green hues, which shift and change depending on sunlight and weather conditions. The lake measures approximately 1 kilometer in circumference and has a maximum depth of about 5 meters.

Renowned for its exceptional clarity, the water in Kaminoko Pond is so transparent that one can see all the way to the bottom, where submerged trees create an ethereal underwater landscape. The lake is fed by underground springs, maintaining a constant temperature of around 8 degrees Celsius throughout the year, ensuring pristine water quality. The name “Kaminoko Pond” is derived from the Ainu language, “kamuy-to,” meaning “lake of God.”

Surrounded by dense forests, Kaminoko Pond is a popular destination for hiking and nature enthusiasts. A scenic trail encircles the lake, offering captivating views of the lake and its surroundings. The lake is also inhabited by various fish species, such as kokanee salmon and rainbow trout, attracting anglers to its shores.

During winter, the lake freezes over, transforming into a picturesque winter wonderland. However, access to the area becomes challenging due to heavy snowfall, and visitors are advised to exercise caution when traveling in the region during the winter months.
